Through using a live event such as the Boston Marathon event, the perpetrators had a world stage to broadcast their beliefs and values toward what they thought of as ‘American interference’ in the wars of Afghanistan and Iraq. Due to the live coverage of the explosions, this meant that the UCC needed to immediately start providing media releases to the public about what had occurred. During the first day on which the bombing occurred, the UCC held four press conferences explaining what they were doing in responding to the injured and how they were ensuring that public safety was the main priority. Of particular importance during these press conferences, was the request for the public to come forward if they had any photographs or video’s taken before, during or immediately after the bombings. By the end of Monday, the 15th April, US State politicians and the media were quite clearly stating that the bombings were an ‘act of terrorism’, however President Obama was choosing his words carefully at this point of time and only stated “We will find out who did this. We’ll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups, will feel the full weight of justice”. This lack of knowledge of the suspects whereabouts is supported by the actions of the FBI where they were desperately seeking information from the public about details about the suspect’s identities as well as where they may be hiding. The authorities were also warning the public that the suspects would most likely heavily armed, a threat to public safety and security and needed to be treated as extremely dangerous. Due to these events being played out on international media sites, the impact of the bombings on US security was significant as the authorities tried to find the suspects to prevent further harm and deaths of US citizens. During this time, and not necessarily knowing whether the two suspects were connected to a specific terrorist group, the US government would have been very aware that until they located the whereabouts of the suspects, the power lay with not only the two men, but also the group who they may have been working
