Title of Artwork: Daughters of the Earth
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Dimensions of Artwork: 51 1/2 x 39 1/2
Written Critique The art work Daughters of the Earth is very creative and detailed. The egg shows how it’s cracked and the mountain shows the shape as the lines of dirt. The hair is also detailed showing the hair strands and you can also see the bodies of the girls their hands, their legs and face. It is asymmetrical since nothing equals to either side in the drawing. The dark brown has a heavier feel so it balances with the gold. The cloth on the main girl is what cached my eyes first since it is a lighter color and also the water drop. All the other colors

The work that I am analyzing is Bathsheba After the Bath by Jan Steen (1626-1679). I believe the meaning of the painting shows exactly what women had to endure to be presented to a man of high royalty and had no rights in the matter to reject his advances. The gloomy colors in the painting correlates with the emotion that Bathsheba expresses. Examining the painting I found interesting props surrounding Bathsheba and the maidservants. The painting tells the story of how King David sent for Bathsheba.…

The Timken Museum of Art has its roots in the coincidental San Diego Relationship between two sisters, the Misses Anne R. and Amy Putnam, members of the Timken family of the Timken roller bearing treasure, and a local attorney, Walter Ames. The affluent Putnam sisters arrived in San Diego in the early 1900s from Vermont, accompanied by their elderly parents and preceded by a millionaire uncle, Henry Putnam. The two sisters never were married, spent decades obtaining Old Masters. Initial paintings were donated to San Diego s Fine Arts Gallery.…

Edna Escamill uses earthy and heavenly imagery throughout the story. One of the heavenly imagery the author uses is when the mass is taking longer than it should be and seeing the priest at the altar, “There were four Fathers at the altar with him dressed in their gold robes.” The image is powerful and shiny. This relates to the topic because the amount of glorified being and the attire they wear seems like heaven itself, an illusion of hope of what's to come. An earthy imagery the poet uses is when the boys are trying to get the bread, “They were filthy from the hot sun and the dessert remolinos that showered them with dust more than once…”…

The popular view of women's nature is seen as virtuous, responsible, and nurturing, the art nonetheless challenged traditional practices and demanded political change. Women have created landscapes, still life, portraiture, and abstraction, but unless the style or name of the artist is easily recognizable an art viewer is generally ignorant as to the identity or sex of the artist. The second wave of feminism became the start of the feminist art movement to achieve equality for women. The feminist art movement challenged the definition of womanhood by facing an encounter between art, social activism, and political thinking through the mediums of crafting, mass communication, and photography to protest towards a greater equality for women and…

Half Caste child (1957) This artwork depicts a young white girl in clinging to an older black man while a black woman is crying in the background. This painting has a historical theme because it shows a child of mixed decent during a time when this was a bad thing. The lack of care she seems to get from the older man helps show this. This painting was painted after the Australian assimilation project when aboriginal people of mixed decent were to be assimilated into white society wether they wanted to or not.…

The next visual element I saw was implied motion. I said this because when looking at the piece it looks as if the bird is eating from the cup. Thorvaldsen makes it look as if it was happening right there. The look that Ganymede is giving the eagle looks as if he were waiting and just watching him eat. The last visual element I saw was texture, as I said earlier the attention to detail and texture in this is excellent.…

Your eyes tend to be drawn right to the center blue oval and follow the piece outwards because of the way it was arranged. These shapes overlap to create a layering effect. There are a wide range of colors used as well. In the center there is a dark blue, and that oval is surrounded by more muted greens, oranges, and yellows. The outer rims of the outermost ovals are colored with a harsher pink and purple color.…

A girl is crouching behind a table and the camera pans out to reveal a CGI velociraptor slowly approaching her direction. However, the visuals themselves is not what creates the tension that this iconic Jurassic Park scene is known for. The entire experience of the scene is what really touches the audience, it’s the unmistakable silence that catches our attention. It’s that silence that draws one in, the kitchen utensils clattering unusually loudly that makes our hearts beat faster, and the frantic violin crescendo causing our anxiety to sky rocket. It is the entire experience that causes the audience to walk out of the theater with adrenaline still rushing throughout their body.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
