It is well known that time is divided into periods, and each one of them has its own artistic features. As a result of this, it could be said that an artist who belongs to a certain period has to follow some guidelines to produce his/her work. This brings up to the question of whether an artist with advanced ideas for his/her time could be understood or not.
There are examples in history that show that it is hard for the artist to be comprehended. For instance, Illustration in Spain arrived late and baroque rules were very rooted. It can happen that new ideas emerge in a certain period and people do not completely dislike it, but strong groups oppose to that ideas causing confusion among society and social pressure. For example, in 19th century two new movements emerged: Realism and Naturalism. Their features were quite similar, but an essential element that a naturalist work had to have was that it had to be treated as science, and realist artists did not accep that, so they started to write against Naturalism.
In conclusion, some artists are misunderstood because they express some advanced ideas for their time and it is hard for society to understand them, or because there exists social pressure practised by some important groups. Nevertheless, this is a controversial issue that has not only one possible
