History of artificial turf

Artificial turfs were developed as an alternative to natural grass surfaces in order to improve durability, decrease maintenance cost and, together with field lighting increase available playing hours. Additionally, artificial turfs are less impacted by weather conditions, resulting in an economically appealing choice for sports clubs and institutions, even with a higher initial investment compared to natural turf. The first artificial grass pitch in Britain was installed in 1971 Islington County, London for a non-commercial football facility (Reference Artificial Surfaces for Outdoor Sports p. 8)
