Artie Chapter Summaries

Decent Essays
Artie is an 11 year old girl who enjoys being different. Artie and her family live in a very run-down and small house, they don’t always get to eat everyday, and doesn’t have a lot of money. She gets to experience 1st hand poverty. Artie thinks she is living a great life until Artie starts to get bullied. She reflects on what others are saying about her and realizes that they’re true. Artie confronts her parents about the issue and they try to explain to her that they are living in poverty. Artie talks to her best friend about it and Artie is very overwhelmed and apprehensive. Artie doesn’t know what to do now that she knows this fact.

Artie makes up her mind and decides she is going to take charge and help her family. He starts going out and hunting to help stock up on food for her family. She also decided to help by doing a large job, plowing the fields. Artie started off fine, but then she made a huge mistake. She accidentally let go of the reigns to the mule. The mules ran all the way across the field and in the street. Artie was able to catch them and bring them back home

This causes her to move up a level and move desks. She is so happy until she realizes who she is sitting by, Sarah Jane. They have been enemies and competing for years. “I was very nervous about moving to sit by Sarah Jane because she does not like sharing her space. Artie understands that her family is going to be poor for a long time and she is starting to lose hope for her future. She gets an assignment at school the next day to write an essay about her family heritage. As she begins researching, she finds that there is more to her family than just poverty. There are great people that went on to do great things with their life. When Artie is finished writing her paper she decides that she is going to stop living a life full of sadness and feelings of loss, but she will live life happy and
