To understand the civil war, a person needs to know more than just the fact that people owned slaves and Abe Lincoln sought to abolish it. It goes back to the drafting of the Constitution. The vision for the union that ended up being drafted in the Articles of Confederation was that of a confederation of mostly independent states, tied together loosely with a Congress as a supervisory body for the common good, mostly to keep Britain from taking over. All powers not specifically given to the federal government belonged to the states, with a very specific requirement that any changes at the federal level be unanimously agreed upon by all states.
