A psychological examination was done in 1968 by Grier and Cobbs, who are two black psychiatrists and they found that blacks that beat their children stems from the root of slavery. Blacks feel that, if they had to suffer beatings, so should their children Black believers like to quote Proverbs 13:24, which say, “He that spared his rod hates his son” and many that quote this verse has it confused. The rod is supposed to be use as a guide, not as a whip. When we discipline our children, we should be teaching them values, not to inflicted punishment, pain and get revenge.
It also stated, how black parents fear if their child gets out of hand, that they will be kill by a police officer, so they rather discipline their child instead.
The article made a comment on how black comedians like to make fun on how their parents whip them with all kinds of harsh things, but after looking at the effects children endure after the beatings it shows no humor: suicidal, outburst, bouts anxiety, sadness, worthlessness, hard time sleeping, and poor peer relation. He could have used a different approach, like maybe talking to his son and popping him on his butt a couple of times with his hand. I totally agree with the psychological examination that the beatings during slavery has an effect on us whipping our children. Our forefathers were beaten, so it’s passed on from generation to generation. I also liked where the article mentions the scripture that is so often misquoted, about sparing the rod and how the rod is supposed to guide and teach values not to
