Susan Moeller of the International Center for Media and the Public Agenda. The study which required Moeller’s Media Literacy class of 200 journalism students at the Phillip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, to abstain from using all media for a 24 hour period. Students were asked to select one 24 hour period between the weeks of February 24- March 4, 2010 to be media-free. After their 24 hours of abstinence students were asked to blog on private class websites about their experiences. From the research Dr. Moeller cites the main conclusion of the study as showing, ‘the portability of all that media stuff has changed students’ relationships not just to news and information, but to family and friends — it has, in other words, caused them to make different and distinctive social, and arguably moral, decisions.’ While Dr. Moeller and six PhD student assistants drew this conclusion, the headline draws a causal correlation that “U.S. students suffering from Internet addiction: study Crackberry is no joke.” After assessing both the report and the study neither of these causal claim is warranted on the basis of this study due to problems with the representativeness, sample size, and the erroneous methodology …show more content…
Although all subjects were asked to refrain from utilizing media of any form for a 24 hour period during one of the seven day, which they were to choose from, could have been waiting on important information, planning on going on spring break vacation or waiting for mid- term result. It was also reported that a few students did report watching TV news or reading a newspaper. This also brings to mind what sort of media were they to abstain from. Webster defines the word “Media: as a medium of cultivation, conveyance, or expression; especially: medium 2b particular form or system of communication (such as newspapers, radio, or television).” Since the term in the article cites only one type of media and there is a broader definition in the dictionary one would enquire for more unambiguous information about what is actually being asked
