Arthur Rankin: A Short Story

Decent Essays
Hello. I hope I am writing the correct person. I am looking for Arthur Rankin.

Currently, I am a student at OC. This past semester is my first one here (or current semester, though it is coming to an end quickly). I don't think I have any of your classes scheduled but, I may see if I can get them switched.

One of my jobs right now is as a freelance reporter for the Odessa American. My goal is to one day become a political journalist and maybe start my own publication. For the time being, however, I am interested in creating a school newspaper but was unsure of who to speak with about it. Is this something that interests you or do you think it would interest anyone else?

Thank you very much for your time. In the case that this is not who

How can one you teach someone to be a man when you aren’t one yourself? For instance, in Ernest Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying, Grant Wiggins, black school teacher, acquires criticism for being ‘passive’. Meeting with the white superintendent, Dr, Joseph, Grant receives complaints, disapproval, and insults of Grant’s students, and even his name. Passively acting, like no true man would, Grant restrains from correcting another because he is scared of the consequences, he doesn’t tell the superintendent what is too much, and he surrenders after requesting for something he wants only once, and avoids demanding for something. You simply cannot call him anything but passive, a real man should not act passively.…

Earnest J. Gaines novel, a Lesson before Dying, is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940’s, where a horrible incident occurs convicting a presumed innocent man, to death. No one quite knows how long Jefferson has, however, in the time he does have, he must learn the most important lesson of all, and that is how to be human. There are many characters in the story that learn this lesson alongside, or even because of, Jefferson, such as Grant and his girlfriend Vivian. The entire community has been effected by Jefferson’s sentence, and every character will learn a lesson while they await the dreaded end to his sentence, and watch as ‘hog’, is turned into a man. Grant Wiggins is the protagonist of the novel, and is given the task of…

The answer to life, the universe, and everything? Simply put, it’s 42. Not only did it take ten million years to get an answer that commonly appears on a fourth grader’s math test, but it also took an incredibly intelligent race on interdimensional mice to discover. Based on that first paragraph alone you should have gotten a taste of the wackiness that goes on in Douglas Adam’s A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. This literary work is bursting with comedic “coincidences”, and it’s difficult not to chuckle at the well timed humor. Although this book is full of comedic relief, it never feels like a joke.…

Through my research I have found that Ernest Gaines and the protagonist in his novel, A Lesson Before Dying are very similar. They both live in Louisiana, are both black men who grew up on plantations post-slavery era, grew up impoverished, were raised by their aunts and both attended university. I do not believe that Gaines intent was to model Grant on his own life. Upon further research, I found that the novel was also loosely based on the non-fictional story of Willie Francis, a black man who was sentenced to death via the electric chair just like Jefferey. However, I do believe that Gaines used aspects of his own life to create Gaines and the setting of the story because he would able to tell and describe it more vividly than if he had…

When Jack Ultor walked into class that day something was a little bit off. Of course, something was always a little bit off with Jack, but this, this was different. A grease stain was smeared across his left cheek and ink splotches covered his hands.…

Richard White’s “The Man Who Was Almost a Man”, is about a young black man named Dave who is an indentured servant in the deep South around the 1930’s. In this story, Dave is continuously trying to prove to others that he is a young man close to being an adult while others around him only see him as a child. He is the only person who believes he is a man instead of a child. This theme is proven throughout the book. During this time around the 1930’s racism was still very much alive in the South and even though slavery was abolished black people were still looked down on.…

Throughout the course of someone’s life, he or she may learn many lessons stemming from the act of teaching. Lessons can also be taught and learned through reading. In Ernest J. Gaines’ novel, A Lesson Before Dying, many lessons can be taught and acquired through knowledge. In the novel, the most important lesson to learn is realizing the struggle and conflict of racism in the past. Racism is brought up over and over throughout the novel and is continuously ignored by the white population in the community.…
