Lee uses imagery to reinforce the ghost-like characterization of Arthur Radley. Arthur has never been seen by either Jem or Scout and is portrayed to them as a creepy and weird in stories and tales told about him. Scout goes on to describe him for a whole paragraph stating how he has “sickly white hands”, “gray eyes”, and “dead and thin hair” creating what would look like a ghost in readers’ minds (Page 362). This completes Arthur’s characterization as a ghost-like figure, the kids of Maycomb even call him ‘Boo’. Arthur has never been seen, which a ghost never is and also communicates to Jem and Scout in unconventional ways. With Scout’s description of Arthur readers can completely imagine him as a ghost that haunts over the Finches life.
