Our Reputation Matters
“There is news, sir, that the court—the court must reckon with. My niece, sir, my niece – I believe she has vanished,” Parris says to Danforth that his niece Abigail has vanished! .One common characteristic of throughout history is the fear of unknown. Humans by nature are tired of that which is different, and the actions of Puritans¬¬¬ during the events that happened in the Crucible by Arthur Miller’s play are not different. Many Characters were forced into horrible situations where their moral, belief, and reputation were put to the court trial. John Proctor was just a farmer in Salem. He need not have been an Ally of any group in the town of Salem. As the court trial goes on John Proctors reputation as being Honest and Upright person he is accused to hanged because he wants to saves others sake. He says to Danforth, “Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth, the dust on the feet of them that hang!” (207). When John Proctor says that, Danforth don’t want to accept it because he knows that John Proctors confessions is not true. That’s why John Proctors reputation centered – mentality causes conflict of how the court makes decisions.
Followed by Reverend Hale. He is naïve witch-hunter and smart. In Act I, Miller describes him as “a tight-skinned, eager-eyed intellectual. Ascertain witchcraft he has felt the pride of the specialist whose unique knowledge has at last been publicly called for,” (151). But as the trial goes Hale throws his lot in with those conflicting the witch trials. The trials are no longer in his hands but within Danforth and the theo¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬cracy, which has no interest in seeing its events exposed as a shame.
