He became a completely different person, and was thinking about doing things he would have never done before (Hawthorne 240). One example he thought of would be teaching little kids bad words. Another thought he had was him telling dirty jokes to the sailor on the docks. In the book he says that the thoughts make him feel like he sold his soul to the devil. This was totally out of character for him and he definitely changed.
The readers can empathize with Arthur Dimmesdale, because he represents what some people go through. A lot of people struggle with honesty. Some are also guilty.
