William S. Harley was born on December 29th, 1880 (-September 18, 1943) in Milwaukee

Wisconsin. Most people know him as Bill Harley or the co-founder and creator of Harley-

Davidson motorcycles. When Bill was young you could always find him drawing or being

creative and inventive. When Bill turned the age of fifteen he began to work at Meiselbach

Manufacturing Company; which built (by hand) expensive bicycles. He was known as a cycle

fitter and knew almost every part of their structure. In about 1901 Bill began a job at Barth

Manufacturing Company which did metal fabricating. His best friend Arthur Davidson worked

there as well. Arthur Davidson grew up next door to Harley and they became best friends even

though Bill was a year older than Davidson.

McFarlane moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin and had five children. Arthur attended the same

schools as Bill until he turned fifteen. He then soon left the Barth Manufacturing Co. with Harley

and they both worked at a Milwaukee manufacturer of mining
