Arthur Ashe's Definition Of A True Hero

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost” (Arthur Ashe). In this quote, Ashe defines what being a hero is. I agree with Ashe’s definition of a hero. A hero must not be concerned with glory, but instead focused on self-sacrifice. Heroism is putting others before yourself and showing courage when faced with a problem. A hero is a person who put others before himself, a person who saves lives and a person who gives hope to others.
Sacrifice and love are the first two words that come to my mind when I think of heroism. It is merely impossible to have both unless you are a true hero. A person who puts others first before himself is a hero. Soldiers and veterans are the best examples of heroes. Soldiers go to war to protect others, to protect the people they love and care. They sacrifice themselves for their country. Soldiers are examples of Ashe’s definition of heroes because they care about others. They work day and night protecting our countries to keep us safe. Heroes are not only fantasy figures or TV show characters, such as Superman or Batman, but also real people. A hero does not need to fly to be the one who save countless lives. Doctors, for instance, are one of the best examples of heroes. Every day and everywhere around the world, doctors succor lives. They dedicate their entire lives helping people and rescuing people. Doctors study for years to get a degree to serve others. Being able to save a life from death is a gift that only a few people have, a gift that only a true hero has.
