The piece show’s Susanna turned away, fending off the menacing elders. Susanna’s body is anatomically correct as well, with folds and wrinkles which could be considered unique compared to other artists’ interpretations of the story. Artemisia’s piece is different from male artists’ due to how Susanna is depicted, instead of being coy and flirtatious with the elders. Susanna instead reflects what a real woman may feel in that situation. This piece could also be said to be an outlet piece portraying similar harassment Artemisia experienced with her sexual assault and with other male artists she worked alone side with (Artemisia-Gentileschi.com).
