If a god or goddess of my choice would give me a gift, I would want to receive a gift from Artemis truthfully because when I first heard of the essay, I instantly thought that it would be cool to get a gift from someone who has the same name as you. While thinking about what gift I want from her, I remembered that when I was younger, I got curious about the origin of my name and so after researching, I came upon Artemis, and as I read more about her, I admired her and I wanted to be her. The Lansdowne private collection consists of over 100 classical art pieces and was accumulated in the late eighteenth century. The two freestanding Greco-Roman sculptures I chose to compare and contrast from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art are the Bateman Mercury from 4th century BCE Rome and the Lansdowne Artemis from 1st Century BCE Rome. As soon as I walked into the exhibition hall, these two artworks stood out to me out of the four selections because of the proportion, anatomy, pose, drapery, and texture of the material they are made from. These two sculptures are also resembled after figures of Greek mythology — Mercury, also knowns as Hermes, is the messenger of the Greek gods and Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting. One can…

Imagine being handed a box but not being allowed to open it. Or having the opportunity to challenge a god or goddess in which there would be great reward or great loss. What would you do in either instance? Comparing "Pandora" and "Athena," two stories from Heroes, Gods and Monsters of the Greek Myths, shows us how the gods gave mortals gifts or talents only to have them punished for their using them. Pandora simply wanted to open the box because she believed that the real object inside was what would bring her joy; just knowing what was in the box would relieve her constant urge to open the box.…

Athena disguises so that way he is protected by the vengeful suitors (Homer, Book 8: 416-440). By disguising Odysseus, she is helping Odysseus to survive and complete his journey. Since the journey of Odysseus is what The Odyssey is about, and Athena’s action had a large impact on Odysseus, therefore she had such powers on the story. Lastly, Homer states “They would have killed the lot, and ended their hopes of returning home, if Athene, Zeus’ aegis-bearing daughter, had not shouted loudly, and restrained the combatants, crying: ‘Men of Ithaca, cease your fight, so that you may part without shedding each others’ blood. ’”(Book 24: 502-548).…

Similar to how the Hope Athena is easily identifiable as the goddess Athena because of her aegis and helmet, there is a certain attribute the Lansdowne Artemis holds that makes it similarly identifiable. It would be nearly impossible to identify this statue as Artemis had it not been for the furrow at the back of it. This is where a quiver would have originally been attached, which is fitting for the goddess of the hunt. It is incredible to think that something as seemingly insignificant as a furrow at the back could reveal such a large clue about the identity of this statue. Although these two statutes differ mainly because the Lansdowne Artemis is missing much of its original composition, they share many similar attributes.…
