On august 21st, 1911, a former Louvre employee, Vincenzo Peruggia, committed on of the most famous art thefts. Peruggia dressed up as an employee and walked into the Louvre museum in paris and walked out with the “Mona Lisa” smuggled underneath his shirt. Peruggia told sauvet that the doorknob was missing so sauvet decided to be helpful and open the door with his key and pliers, not knowing that he had the “Mona Lisa” hidden under his white smock.
Peruggia walked straight out of the Louvre museum and into the Parisian heatwave. He successfuly stole Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”, or so he thought. In
December 1913, a prominent art dealer in Florence was contacted by an Italian house painter, Peruggia, who claimed to have the “Mona Lisa” in his possession.
Police the rushed over to where Peruggia was and arrested him. Peruggia served six months in jail for stealing on of the world’s most famous paintings.
There are many reasons why art is consider very valuable. On of those reasons being that art is so beautiful and “beauty” is hard to capture. It also is determined by who created it and how many there are of it, if theres one then it is considered one of a kind and will therefore cost a lot more. Another reson why it is so valuable is because art allows an insight into the conditions of a society during a certain period in time, and they help to remind us of where we come from. Art informs us of our ancestors and how they
