Art Review: Basketball Superstars By Leroy Neiman

Improved Essays
The piece of art that I chose to write about was, Basketball Superstars by Leroy Neiman, painted from November eleventh to December seventh. This painting was featured in the Hastings Gallery.
In this painting I see a lot of the all time greatest basketball players. I see eleven time NBA Champion Bill Russell, the only player to ever score one hundred points in a game, Wilt Chamberlain. I also see Willis Reed, who I think is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving also known as Dr. J, and Oscar Robinson. The rest of the players in the painting I do not know. This painting was painted in a way that allowed the viewer to see the individual strokes made by the artist.
When I first saw this painting my focus immediately went to the three main players

Julius Erving is considered to be one of the great individual basketball players of all time. It’s not just his incredible play that makes him special, he symbolizes many things about the start of the golden age of basketball. He symbolizes the divide between the ABA, or streetball, and the NBA. He symbolizes determination and perseverance not just for waiting 7 years for his first NBA title, but for pushing through the deaths of his brother and later his son. Finally he symbolizes a role model no matter what race you were.…

My initial reaction upon looking over Turner’s “Slave Ship” was that it appeared to be a beautiful landscape. The way the sky looks over the ship and the horizon line is really striking and powerful. However, as you start to look down you start to see the reason for the name of “Slave Ship”. Along the bottom of the painting you can see body parts of humans in the water. There are hands and feet, the foot on the bottom right has a shackle still attached to the ankle and there appear to be fish eating at the body.…

The poem “Ex-Basketball Player” by John Updike chronicles the life and daily routine of the former high school basketball standout, Flick Webb. The speaker leads the reader on a journey through Flick’s life, starting with the main road in the town, progressing to Flick’s low end jobs, and then finishing with his habits. Flick was once the best basketball player in the area. However, he has since fallen from stardom and now he just “sells gas, checks oil, and changes flats.” (l. 19-20) Personification is also used when the narrator asserts that "the ball loved Flick".…

In Bill Simmons’ recent article entitled LeBron is Still Painting his Masterpiece, Simmons argues that LeBron James’ legacy is far from its inevitable twilight. He compares James’ past and present obstacles to those of other legendary athletes, such as Michael Jordan. Simmons, using a plethora of writing structures and styles, also discusses the historical ups-and-downs of the National Basketball Association. The article uses several anecdotes and facts to both humor the reader and support the author's thesis stated in the title. Why the hell does our society care so damn much about sports?…

Through you Kobe looked out over the horizon as the Colorado sun began to set and wondered if his feeling of helplessness and lost hope would ever seize to exist. It was December 7th, 1997, “it has only been 7 months” he thought out loud to himself. Kobe sat on the ledge of the cliff, missing his father more and more each day, he missed his laugh and the way he smiled at his son every time Kobe scored in a basketball game, he missed fishing with his father, and watching football on Sunday afternoons, but most of all he missed his best friend. Kobe had begun to struggle in school and sports, his family and friends were worried about him and Kobe was quiet, he sat isolated at lunch and never spoke during practice. All the figures are believed to be representative of greek philosophers. The two most central figures being Plato and Aristotle. Plato, a philosopher and teacher from classical Greece, is on the left and shown as an older man, more wise and holding his book, ‘Timaeus’, which focuses on the ‘beauty he observes in the universe’(Zyel, D. 2013 para.1).Plato points up towards the sky which goes with his stance on the idea that reality is eternal and unchanging (Khanacademy.org para.3).…
