One of my favorite art installations is the "Monumental Moments" series by artist Anthony Thompson Schumate. There is a total of six single word expression - Explore, Pause, Reflect, Listen, Emerge, and Observe located throughout the park. Each four-foot-tall sculptures constructed from 4” high-density polyethylene. In my quest to find all six installations, I had asked a woman if she knew where anywhere located surprisingly she said as often as she walked the park she did not notice the sculptures. Her comment made me realize how we usually take our surroundings for granted and how busy we can get caught up in our personal lives. As we parted ways, she thanked me for bring the sculptures to her attention and said she would be more mindful

1 – In his study of abstract art, David Halle sought to answer multiple questions about abstract art, specifically the ownership and opinions pertaining to it. First, Halle looked at who had abstract art in their homes; determining if the ownership of abstract art indicated social class, he then moved on to more subjective questions such as opinions of abstract art. Halle asked questions about who disliked and liked abstract art for a few different reasons; to learn the specific thinking behind these preferences and to learn if these preferences were linked to knowledge or perceptions within different social classes. In addition, Halle sought to refute Pierre Bourdieu’s claim that only people with cultural capital like or understand abstract…

When visiting the Roman exhibits, I saw a lot of currency coins from different time periods and where the coins were discovered in the former Empire. There were different emperor’s faces that were engraved on the coins. I noticed the Romans kept their coin’s design very simple. The museum displayed many different types of items that the ancient Roman people used in their daily lives.…

As I walked down the toy section of Target I was looking for a toy that I would have used as a child. With the knowledge I have today I will be able to relate the toys I used as a child with toys used by girls and explore the role of toys in the socialization of children in sport and exercise. The toy that I choose was a Minion Big Wheel Tricycle. This toy was targeted more towards boys because on the front of the box there was a boy riding it. There were no girls on the box at all as well as the color scheme of the toy was boy colors themed.…

For this assignment I visited the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and chose a painting from the 2016 Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition. The oil on linen painting was titled Professor Quimby and was made in 2014 by Cyd Goodwin. Goodwin appears to be influenced by theatrical plays as most of her paintings revolve around the same subjects/people. In Professor Quimby, one can see a young woman in a greenish dress, standing, looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Diagonally from the woman is a man sitting on a stool, wearing a dark suit with a red bowtie, and a pipe in his hand.…

A museum requires a performant lightning system in order to observe the exhibits in a proper way. Taking a walk in Tate Modern I noticed that the light intensity as well as the light distribution is different in each space: the galleries from the Turbine Hall and the halls. In the galleries there are glowing light boxes displayed on the ceilings. The boxes are made out of glass and a steel frame. In addition to these there are also attached movable light bulbs on the steel skeleton of the boxes.…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
