For this assignment I visited the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and chose a painting from the 2016 Cumberland Valley Artists Exhibition. The oil on linen painting was titled Professor Quimby and was made in 2014 by Cyd Goodwin. Goodwin appears to be influenced by theatrical plays as most of her paintings revolve around the same subjects/people. In Professor Quimby, one can see a young woman in a greenish dress, standing, looking over her shoulder at the viewer. Diagonally from the woman is a man sitting on a stool, wearing a dark suit with a red bowtie, and a pipe in his hand. The man appears to be looking in the direction of the woman but when one looks closer, they can see that the man is actually looking past her. The setting

This was the painting that caught my eye out of all of the rest of the pieces in the exhibit. I personally really love paintings of people rather than objects because one can really pull different emotions and thoughts out of them. That being said, I really liked how natural everything looked; it is almost as if someone had snapped a quick photo in that very moment. In the painting the viewer can reveal the personality from the characters just by looking at their poses; the young woman seeming very confident and flirty in her green dress, while the man on the stool is very content and relaxed. However, the only problem I found with this piece was the colors. If the colors in this piece were a bit brighter, I would most likely buy it and hang it in my house. Overall, I think Goodwin did a great job in successfully conveying her message the artwork. It was my first time visiting the Museum of Fine Arts and can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. While looking for artwork for this assignment I wandered into other parts of the museum and was intrigued by some of the old furniture that was on display, especially the old chair. I found it fascinating to see the work and detail that was put into the making of it.
