The art museum that I was able to visit is called the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. This is a fairly small museum. It exhibited a peaceful ambiance. The arts it included were mostly paintings. Overall, I was not impressed with the museum. The museum displayed artists with a lot of bright colors that really jumped out at you. I personally prefer classical art over contemporary art. I feel that classical art has more of a calming feel to it. I also really like art from the Hellenistic period. Any historical Greek art is cool to me. I feel that it just draws you in unlike contemporary art is able to. The first object that I chose is a piece by Shepard Fairey. This object is a mixed media painting on a canvas. It is called “Rise Above Rebel” created in 2011. The dark black and red colors used in the painting are typical for Fairey to incorporate in his work. The title of the work was inspired by lyrics from the band Black Fig. The song is called “Rise Above.” Fairey uses symbolism in his paintings. This painting in particular, symbolizes positivity and resilience. The …show more content…
To state the obvious, one is a painting and the other is a sculpture. Fairey used a red and black palette to create the mixed media painting. Delvoye’s sculpture looks gothic and sparkly, which is a complete different style then the painting. It also has a lot more intricate details in the sculpture. You can tell that the artist spent a great deal more time creating the sculpture. The one similarity that these two artists possess in their art is the intention of creating beauty. Fairey is symbolizing positivity and resilience, which I find to be a trait that is beautiful. It’s also beautiful that the woman is overcoming such suffering and making the choice to be strong, that is my take on it anyways. Delvoye is attempting to bring beauty into something ordinary. The first object that I chose is the “Attic Red-Figure Column Krater” which was found in Athens, Greece. This Greek artifact was made in the Classical Period around 480 BCE. This object is roughly a foot tall and 3/4ths of a foot wide. The object itself is a Greek vase that widens as it nears the top. It has two handles on either side placed at the top of the vase where the bottom ends of the handles stop just before the vase bows out.…

Wandering through the museum's website, I stumbled upon an article that stated that David Wallace Haskins, a Chicago-based artist of the Skycube would be making an appearance on Sunday, November 29th. I thought that was interesting, so I decided to check it out. When I arrived, I was greeted by a thin older woman who smiled at me warmly. This was definitely the most simple of the displays put here because all of the paintings were lifelike and easy to decipher because they were also more straightforward and seldom open to interpretation unlike the photos in Concentrations 60. Overall, visiting the Dallas Museum of Art was a new and exciting experience because its exhibits really opens one’s eyes as to how art alone reflects different periods of time, cultures, and places around the world and evolves as does humanity. Moreover, it shows how art does not come from culture, but creates it and often evinces the psyche of its…

Traditionally, museums are considered secular sites in which curators display art objectively; however, in her work, “The art museum as ritual,” Carol Duncan examines how museums act as powerful entities which influence the visitors’ perception through the display, organization, and architecture of the space. She elaborates that the museum’s authority actually enables them to represent and define entire communities, which consequently shapes the visitors’ perceptions of said communities. Perhaps Duncan’s claim is best summarized as: “To control a museum means precisely to control the representations of a community and its highest values and truths… What we see and do not see in … museums and on what terms and by whose authority we do or do…
