Art Dugoni, SMCDS member of 63 years and 1960 board president, has been not only the cornerstone of our local community, but is recognized the world over. The Kansas City Athenaeum was founded in 1894, when several residents of the growing town came together to form a literary group, and also pursued philanthropic activities that would benefit the community and address other civic causes of the city. Over the years, the Athenaeum has been dedicated to promoting Kansas City culture through education, historic preservation, friendship and philanthropy. Art was born in October 13, 1909 in Toledo, OH to pianist Mildred Hoskins and Guitarist Arthur Tatum Sr. Completely blind by cataracts in one eye and nearly blind in the other, Art played music by ear, mimicking the sounds he heard from other musicians such as Fats Waller.
