“My best heroes and teachers don’t live on pedestals. They lead complex, messy lives, offering me reflections of myself and standing with me against the gawkers.” (p 500). I considered Richard to be Arts hero. Richard was the only person who could understand and communicate with Art. He made Art feel seen and important, which was all he wanted. When people gawk at Art or call him names, Richard was there to stick up for Art. Richard led a very complex and messy life. Before Mike committed suicide he left a message on Richard’s phone. He asked Richard what he thought about on the plane coming home from Vietnam. To me, it seemed like Mike had no idea what was waiting for him when he came home. I do not think he anticipated having psychological problems. When he came home they started. I took this particular quote and flipped it around. When Sarah and James were at the dinner party he felt out of place. He did not know how to act or what to say. In that situation, he was the “other”. James was feeling what Sarah must feel. To me, that situation should have opened his eyes and he should have started treating Sarah better, but he still treated her like she was nothing without him. “I am looking for friends and allies, for communities where the staring, gaping, gawking finally turns to something else, something true to the bone.” (p501).
