Wassily Kandinsky was born on December 4, 1866, in Moscow, Russia, to musical parents Lidia Ticheeva and Vasily Silvestrovich Kandinsky, a tea merchant. When Kandinsky was about 5 years old, his parents divorced, and he moved to Odessa to live with an aunt, where he learned to play the piano and cello in grammar school, as well as study drawing with a coach. Even as a boy he had an intimate experience with art; the works of his childhood reveal rather specific color combinations, infused by his perception that "each color lives by its mysterious life. Antonio Barberini SR Antonio Barberini is the younger brother of Maffeo Barberini, who became pope in 1623. In 1624 he made a cardinal and spent the whole day in religious devotions in Rome and eventually became a secretary after being an Inquisitor in 1629 following the death of Gian Garzia Millini. Barberini “conducted the final phase of Galileo’s trial” and sought to dominate his order with illegal actions such as appointing “one of its friars as consultor to the Inquisition” forcefully. At his direction, The Capuchin church of the Immaculate Conception was built, and inside his tombstone reads “Here ashes and dust and nothing.” With Catholicism easily being assumed as heavy in Antionio Barberini’s family, you can assume him of having very traditional views.…

Volunteering had shown me numerous ways to give back but my love for understanding scientific concepts, working with my hands and practicing culinary arts convinced me that dentistry is a combination of the things I love. Whether it was carving intricate designs into the dried backs of calabash gourds from a young age, crocheting, or working with the multifarious and sometimes limited tools in my kitchen to bring to life the artful recipes in my head, I saw similarities. The satisfaction coursing through me when I lay eyes on the finished product has always been a motivator, one that will fuel my desired dental…

Throughout this course I have gained more of an appreciation for artwork and the artists that create them. I have also gained an appreciation for the people that try to define what art is in general or more specifically what makes good art. We have read great thinkers and their philosophies on this, and the fact that even people of such great intelligence can disagree on the subject proves how challenging it can be. By reading the opinions of these great thinkers, and by discussing their thought with our class, I feel I am in a much better place as to define what makes good art myself. I define art as anything created by someone that inspires another to appreciation.…
