Art Deepen Mystery

Francis Bacon was correct in his statement “The job of the artist is always to deepen the mystery.” Art should deepen mystery by raising questions, challenging ideas, and including symbolism. The artist creates something in order to send a message. It is the job of the person on the receiving end to interpret that message, and then take it a step further and decide what they are going to do in reaction to their interpretation.
In nearly every book I’ve read, authors may deepen characters, create symbolism, create misdirection, or offer facts that may raise questions. An author may also add contradictory facts to prompt a reader to ask questions and deepen the mystery in that manner. Also, a writer incorporates a theme that, when the reader analyzes the story, deciphers. It is the reader’s choice to apply what they’ve learned to their life.

Every year, my choir goes to the Joffrey Ballet and sings the Snow Scene for The Nutcracker. After intermission, we watch the second act. Christopher Wheeldon was the choreographer for the new Nutcracker and, by watching the second half, I analyzed and interpreted the mystery of Clara and her relationship with the other dancers as well as the overall storyline through Wheeldon’s direction and through each dancer’s movements and reactions to one another. Scott Speck, the musical director, told the story through the music. Some ways he did this included the tempo and the instruments used during the particular piece, deepening the mystery the dancers are creating. The Nutcracker takes place in the already mysterious World’s Fair in 1893, which is helpful in having a mystery already set out, but as Francis Bacon said, the artist’s job is to deepen that mystery. Deepening the mystery intrigues the audience and draws them

Everyone remembers the classic fairy tale The Sleeping Beauty, but few have experienced the fascinating twist that is presented by the Moscow Festival Ballet. Directed by Sergei Radchenko, the audience is left on the edge of their seat at every stage of the three act performance; from the curse set on The Sleeping Beauty to the moment she falls in love and gets married. The captivating story of the Sleeping Beauty (Princess Aurora) involves multiple elements that all add to the success of the performance in their own unique way, which create a wonderful work of art. This is precisely why Marius Petipa’s choroeogrphy is considered to be at the top of the spectrum when it comes to classical ballet. More specifically, these elements include Tchaikovsky’s musical talent which sets the tone for the performance, the vibrant costume design which draws the audience’s full attention, and finally the character development of Princess Aurora which sends her on an imaginative journey to eventually fall in love.…

Kristina Snyder Ms. Maylett Honors Freshmen English/Period 7 8 October 2015 Graceful Growth When my teacher Ms. Erin first pulled me aside after class to tell me I would be Clara in The Nutcracker, squealing with joy, I grinned from ear to ear, hardly able to contain my excitement. I can still remember learning and practicing all the complicated steps, buying my own glittery nutcracker to use for the performances, and getting fit for the baby pink costume and soft, chiffon, white dress. Tiptoeing backstage as I warmed up, the warmth of the lights hugging my skin, and the glimmer of my white nightgown, these performances gave me memories as everlasting as the ocean’s tides. That weekend only one thing held me back, the pain of sharp needles…

Brad Watson’s “The Misses Moses” follows the narrator as he seeks to rent a room from two odd spinster sisters. As the story progresses, strange yet subtle observations made by the narrator as well as the lack of clarification surrounding what led to the narrator’s current circumstances add to the quiet atmosphere of the story. Through the usage of ambiguity, subtly delivering or withholding details, and tactful character development and descriptions, Watson crafts a quiet yet intriguing story with potential for a variety of interpretations. Throughout the story, there are a lot of details that are not imparted to the readers in a straightforward manner which would allow readers greater insight into the surroundings of the characters.…

The stage was dimly light with spotlight shinning the battle, and Tchaikovsky’s suspenseful music was clashing throughout the hall adding the firewood to the heated scene. There was a pack of gigantic mice surrounding the mouse king and the nutcracker prince in circle, who persistently and continuously stepped forward with their feet, leaned their upper torso inward and an in reflective swing pushed on their legs to reposition themselves. All the mice doing this in unison made it seem that even if the prince managed to defeat the king, he would still be eliminated by the storming pack of mice army. The mouse king appeared much threatening as well – he was much larger than the other mice and on his head was bunches of mouse heads clumped together like a grape. In addition to this obscure appearance, it would rhythmically swing toward and back with legs stepping forward and back, with synchronized powerful swing of an arm yielding the sword it grasped firmly on its hand.…

Literature sometimes embeds secrets in the narrative of a text. What remains unreachable for the reader produces the desire for them to find the truth about something). Bennet and Royle call this “the process of unfolding and revelation” (271). “Short fiction seems more targeted - hand grenades of ideas, if you will. When they work, they hit, they explode, and you never forget them,” (Bacigalupi). Two stories, “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber and “The Interlopers” by Saki, provide compelling information on the ways that authors use style. While theme is not necessarily a concrete concept, it can be argued that these two stories share a similar theme: “things are not always as they seem.” This theme is important because it appears readily in reality, not only in fiction stories.…
