Art Blakey was born in October 11, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Marie Roddicker, and a father who left him at birth. He later married Clarice Stewart. Art blakey married a total number of four times and had about 12 children, 5 of them were adopted.
Art Blakey had a family at a young age and he needed to provide for them. So he quit school and started to perform Jazz as he did not wish to work in the mines according to him. He switched to drums, however, as a gangster came into the cub Blakey was playing at and was impressed by him. He told him to switch to drums and Blakey had no choice but to oblige as the gangster had a gun with him.
This switch became a blessing in disguise for him as he instantly started to gain fame because of it. Because of him becoming a drummer his Band started to go on tours and started gaining fame. Some of his Major Achievements was that he was induced into the Down beat Jazz Hall of Fame and he was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of fame.
