Art Appreciation Project Leonardo Da Vinci is arguably one of the most famous artists in the world. He is known largely for a few of his paintings, one of them being the “Mona Lisa.” Leonardo Da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452. He was the illegitimate child of a Florentine notary and was raised by his father until he was fifteen, when he had his first apprenticeship working Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo grew up in a village near Florence, Italy. Most of his life was spent in a small town, coincidentally named Vinci. In 1502 and 1503 Leonardo was a military engineer for Cesare Borgia in Florence where he was able to do weapons work along with maps. He designed new weapons and maps for the military. The Mona Lisa is a painting of a wealthy silk merchants wife. Leonardo is thought to have used a pyramid design. Her hands are the corners of the pyramid and going up her body forms the rest. This not only shows Leonardo’s unique painting style but it also shows his years of school along with the structural science that was developed in that time. This piece is even more artistically special due to the way Leonardo uses his colors and brightness. The painting does not use loud bright or welcoming colors, yet it still seems welcoming with the dark color use. In this time the Mona Lisa was most likely just thought to be a lovely painting of someones wife. Today, it is thought by many that this is the most famous painting from that time. This the opinion of many for the mysterious half smile Madonna Lisa or Mona Lisa for short, gives or the placement of her background and the look in her eyes she has. This piece gives many historical significance because it shows what was really going on in that time, all the steps forward made in art and science even come out in the simple paintings Leonardo
