Self Reflection Essay Example

I started studying art and design at the foundation course in Coventry University back in 2009. My hopes were to get accepted in the automotive transport design course there, but as I progressed into the foundation year I realised that I was much more interested in making “print stuff” as I called it back then. During my first year of graphic design at Coventry University, I applied to transfer to LCC straight into year two to get the most out of my student loan and get closer to London and its design scene. I put myself under a lot of pressure to succeed as a student during my time at LCC. When I could afford to not work part-time, I was almost always in the studio getting more work done, trying to learn as much and as fast as possible. I think one of the most important things I learned while at LCC is that it’s extremely important to be self-disciplined and idealistic/optimistic while being able to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. I had trust in my ability to take on anything. Still despite my best efforts, it proved to be still immensely difficult to find a good job.
I was glad I maintained another set of skills on top of the university curriculum. Since my first year in graphic design, I have been learning web development mostly as a hobby. But when graphic design studios were only looking for candidates more experienced than myself, I started thinking about how I could realistically find a good job quickly. My time freelancing at Condé Nast taught me that I could market myself as more than a visual designer and start wearing more than one hat. There are times when I consider myself more of a technician than a pure designer - Ideas were never really my cup of tea and high technical craft is sadly seen as a geeky thing in digital design, instead of an aesthetic
