The relationship between art and death in "The Masque of the Red Death" is their presence. In the beginning of the story, Poe writes about how the pestilence of the Red Death was taking over the prince's dominion. "When his dominions were half depopulated..." This shows the evidence of the overwhelming presence of death. There are multiple times in the short story where art is present, such as "... twenty or thirty yards, and at each turn a novel effect." The hallways in the prince's apartments each have a unique style, and the passage explains how every hall includes a new form of art.
