Art Analysis: The Sugar Shack By Ernie Barnes

The cultural work I selected is by a famous African American painter named Ernie Barnes, and to be more specific the painting is named “The Sugar Shack”, which was made in 1976. The painting was used to bring light to what African Americans had to do during the 1960’s in order to gather together and have fun without being harassed by law enforcement and other civilians for being happy. I first saw the work in a popular show that was made in the 1970’s called Good Times, about African Americans living in the poverty areas of Chicago. The elements that stuck out to me in the painting were the signs located in the painting, giving people in The Sugar Shack an opportunity to showcase their talents, or just having fun dancing with having the opportunity to win money, also the live band, that showed the authenticity of music they loved to hear and express themselves on the dancefloor. …show more content…
He wanted to show, there was something they had to look forward to other than being discriminated against. The painting itself was extremely successful, it mainly turned heads and gained a lot of interest when shown in the sitcom Good Times'. People were now intrigued and wanted to know more about the painting, but also the real artist behind it. At one point in time the painting was bought at $25,000 by a famous actor, but today in 2024 the painting is now worth over ten million dollars, and there are only two original
