Art Analysis: The Listening Room

Improved Essays
The art piece that I chose to write about is called “The Listening Room” (La chambre d'écoute) . The painting was created in 1952 by Rene Magritte, and Rene belonged to the Surrealism Movement .The Surrealism Movement started in the early 1920s. I first saw the art piece at the Menil Art Museum .When I first saw the painting I instantly knew that it was a oil painting ,because of the way everything was put together. I chose to write about this artwork because of the apple is huge ,and green apples are one of my favorite fruits . I honestly think if it was a red apple I wouldn't like the painting and I wouldn't want to write about it,and even though I absolutely love strawberries if Rene was to replace the apple with a strawberry the painting …show more content…
Visual texture is shown because I can't physically touch the apple I can only imagine how it would it feel .I would imagine that the apple would feel soft but yet hard at the same time. Also the stem would feel rough and hard, but the floors looks soft as the apple but yet again feel hard .Mass is a volume that has or gives the illusion of having ,weight, density, and bulk (Gateways To Art ) . The apple in the oil painting has a illusion of weighing a 100 pounds depending on how you look at the painting .Meaning the apple is in a room ,and Rene wants people to imagine that their are in room with apple, but the apple is much bigger than their are. Value is shown in the painting because of the window that is apart of the painting ,because if it wasn't for the window the it would not “light” shining on half of the apple while the other half if dark . Rene wants the window being part of the reason this painting shows value. The element shape is part of the painting because it makes up the apple's figure, meaning the way the room’s size and shape helps shape the apple and emphasize how big the apple is. Color plays a huge part in this painting because without it you would not be able to determine what is what and how it all comes

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

An art gallery featuring paintings by Cindy Vojnovic was held in ESU’s Fine and Performing Art Center this past Wednesday. Vojnovic stated that she had gotten into painting when she was around three years old, after visiting an art exhibit with her parents, because she was “completely lost in the brush work”. Vojnovic’s paintings told the story of a forgotten steam-boat fire that happened on June 15, 1904. The sinking of the General Slocum, or the General Slocum disaster was the burning of a steamboat on the shoreline of New York. Most of the people who died in that fire were women and children, meaning more than 50% of the total passengers had not survived.…

This piece is oil on canvas and is 48 x 45 inches. This shows a predominate sky which bears down with intense presence on earth. In the painting you can barely notice the horizon line; it appears as if the sky is the whole picture. This picture is built up by many luminous layers of thinly applied color which shows light and atmosphere with depth and deep mystery.…

Another matching element that many miss when initially looking at the painting is the sister’s apron and the curtains are actually the same pattern Lastly, the pitchfork is shown again on the shirt of the man. I also love the contrasting colors of the painting as well. The light colors of the blue sky and green trees pairs perfectly with the dark colors both the man and woman are wearing. “ Anna “Why do you think they are so serious in the painting?” Jesse “I think it’s interesting how the colors the painting almost look faded or muddy, giving the painting almost an eerie feeling of possibly sadness or depression.…

This week’s reading is basically about the ordinary affects, the term that we may hear before but not really pay attention to. The reading is very interesting that is composed by different vignettes. Many vignettes are the ordinary everyday life and very familiar for me but I have never thought differently. Author Kathleen Stewart is trying to use different vignettes to show how we can think deeply of ordinary everyday life and shift our practical knowledges of intimate experiences. Stewart thinks that ordinary affects can affect the everyday life and gives it the quality of a continual motion of relations, scenes, contingencies and emergences.…

In her 2006 article “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean argues that the using the word “art” for both past visual expressions (particularly nonwestern) does not quite capture the true definition of what these pieces are. This argument is valid, to consider these works as mere entertainment erases a culture’s true history and identity. Dean has a very strong argument for the analysis and retirement of the term “art”, however the ideas surrounding the concept of “art” explain the larger issue as a whole. Carolyn Dean argues that pinning the recent idea of “art” on nonwestern works does not inform one about the culture, but rather condenses that culture into easily defined novelties.…

Not being able to see through the painting shows opaqueness and knowing this about the painting is very important to understand the meaning of it. The painting also has layers to it. The closest layer seems to be the clouds on the bottom so that is the first layer. Also, the clouds on the first layers are bright and obvious while the third layers clouds are dark and gloomy. The second layer or middle layer is Thetis and Jupiter with the eagle on the side and this is the most important layer.…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
