On November 23, 2016, I visited Gallery 522 in Bismarck, ND. There are various artists throughout the gallery. Susan Lundberg’s watercolor painting, Raindrops, beautifully depicts five individuals, three women and two men, standing on the street corner in the rain holding different colored and size umbrellas. PreTemp on Paris is an oil on canvas painting also by Lundberg. This painting illustrates a man sitting on the bench in front of a large building.…

This piece is oil on canvas and is 48 x 45 inches. This shows a predominate sky which bears down with intense presence on earth. In the painting you can barely notice the horizon line; it appears as if the sky is the whole picture. He painted this based on his perception of how he saw Paris at night. This painting shows the “sensation of the speed of the motorcar” in the street, as well as the “fascination of the city at night.” This painting relates more closely to the “real” physical world than Tanguy’s imagination, more so than his Figure 3. Yves Tanguy, Rue de la Santé. 1925. Oil on canvas, 50.2 x 61.1 cm.…

She wears a thin wisp of a gown that would likely be considered scandalous in other company, but this gathering is not easily scandalized. It is more a delicate swathe of red silk held in place by a tightly laced corset than a proper dress. And it is not the relative insubstantiality of her clothing that causes Marco to stare, but the tattoo that snakes across her skin. At first, it is difficult to discern what it is, the shower of black marks that curls around her shoulder and neck, ending just above her cleavage in the front and disappearing behind the laces of her corset in the back. It is impossible to tell how far beyond that the tattoo travels.…

Beginning with her headwear, remarkably prominent bands cover her forehead and advance to the top of her head. The band across her forehead is patterned with alternating plants, while the one directly above it doesn’t have an elaborate embroider, but is instead separated by two internal horizontal lines, giving it the appearance of three separate sections. Her hair is wrapped around this band giving it the realistic function of keeping her hair out of her face. Her hair is also tucked behind her ears and eventually extends to the upper part of her chest. The carefully carved curved lines within her hair help give it a flowing movement.…
