In Woman in a Purple Coat (1937), Matisse painted his assistant and companion, reclining in a Moroccan costume, set in an interior with exotic patterns and abstract ornamentation. He has avoided straight lines in this composition, however the colours clash in such a way that the image still works. He uses colour and light to rejoice in life. This was amongst the last of Matisse’s oil paintings. He soon began making paper cut-out collages instead of working in paint, due to ill health.…

Because of the title of this work we know that depicted are the Christ child carried by the Virgin Mary with a female saint embracing the child along with Saint John the Baptist as an infant to the right. Titian placed the figures in a pyramidal structure around the Christ Child so that one’s eye focuses on the Christ Child. In addition, although Saint John the Baptist is not physically in contact with the other three figures, his strong exchange glance at the child brings him together. Work seems balanced since the Virgin Mary, the female saint and Saint John the Baptist all look toward the Christ Child. In this painting, Tiziano Vecellio…

Emotions of negativity trail with Gregor Samsa in The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, as Gregor’s body slowly transforms into a bug-like body size of a human; resulting in undesired “torture” from his family and himself. Although change isn't always followed with horrid results, it's hard to adjust to, since pain, suffrage and misunderstandings create obstacles. Discomforts of a specific situation leads to pain- state of being hurt- when something in movement is not welcomed. To feel loved is necessary in a human-being’s life; once loneliness wraps around one’s life, things begin to shift; and others surrounding one, gradually begins to be affected. For instance, when Gregor overheard that his sister, Grete- which was the only one who ever cared…

My thought is the early Christians who painted this image believe the story of the three Hebrew boys throne in the fiery furnace to be true. Somehow these Christians associated their dead. There is a key piece about the story that some forget. The King ordered the flame of the furnace so hot that the men who through the three boys on the fire would parish as they tossed them in. Perhaps anyone seeking to dishonor the burial space would parish as…

Standing alone in a case in the middle of an upper level gallery room, one will find a humbly sized diptych, which vibrantly grabs the attention of anyone who passes it. To a knowing viewer, it becomes almost immediately evident that this is the work of none other than Jan van Eyck himself. This piece juxtaposes two biblical scenes commonly depicted by Renaissance artists, but with a Netherlandish attention to detail, as well as other formal elements endemic to van Eyck’s style. These components include an emphasis on highly saturated colors, a strong use of spatial elements, and highly realistic physical renderings of the subjects depicted.…

The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. The colors used are in earthly tones, and there is a strong overall contrast of dark and light. This dramatic lighting technique can be seen in the central figure. His outstretched arms form a V line.…

“The Country Husband,” “American Beauty,” and “The Metamorphosis” are considered classics in today’s time and share a plethora of similarities. The similarities include the overarching themes such as alienation and unexpected change. Each of the creators wove these themes into the work they created. In these stories, the main characters are portrayed as victims of circumstance who simply have run into some sort of bad luck. All three of the works can be looked at as an almost ironic description of a man’s midlife crisis.…

It is easy to get stuck in the mud of routine. Life can be difficult, and complacency is all too sweet a friend in these times. If one is not careful, however, this stagnant way of life can be crippling, as it causes one to settle for less than their best. Once caught in this rut, it can be almost impossible to get out. In Franz Kafka’s novella, The Metamorphosis, the protagonist, Gregor Samsa, finds himself in this very situation.…

Pablo Picasso, known as one of the world’s most influential and well-documented artists of the twentieth century. Unlike most, Picasso’s legacy as a prominent rule breaker, an inventor of forms, an innovator of styles and techniques, a master of various media, has long since been recognized the genius in modern art. Yet the medium in which was Picasso’s most important contribution was painting, or oil painting on canvas. The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…
