Art Analysis: George Silk Picture Of Little Rock Integration

Introduction George Silk photo of Little Rock Integration was taken on September 25th 1957. This piece is a part of Life Photo Collection located in New York, New York. I chose this artwork, because it reminds me of how hard it was for integration in the Deep South especially in my home state of Arkansas. My first impression is how much courage it took for nine African-American students to go against all odds and enter Central High on that day. Also, this shows me how hard it was to be black in the 1950s in the Deep South.
Elements

Unity of the photograph is created by monochromatic color scheme of black, and white value drawing attention to the darker part of the photo leading it by the white draws the eyes to the main focus in center of the photograph. Addition, the proportion draws eyes into looking at the people of the school, making the size of the people feel up close and the building farther away than it really is. I feel like the title “Little Rock Integration” refers to the nine African Americans that wished to enter the all-white school meaning that they were integrating school. The dark background that makes visual tunnel to the young African American women that seem to be wearing white or lighter color clothes causing that to be the main focus of the photograph. This photo implies struggle and oppression of African Americans for years telling them that they were not as equal as white people. That the high school “central” was something that the African American’s thought about as being something forbid, but now

For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

They are too small beyond recognition, so viewers can just make out a figure. Some artworks that impressionists in the 19th century created share some commonalities with this painting. Impressionists depicted the nature with phenomenology excluding political, social, historical thought. They just focused on nature itself, so people are usually cropped or are represented by blurry silhouettes.
