Art Analysis: Columns

There are different geometric shapes in this piece. The piece had simple geometric shapes, such as spheres, cones, rectangle and cylinders. The pieces looks focal due to the use of so many distinct geometric shapes and colors within it. The use of lines, colors, and shapes within this piece is what really appealed to me. In this painting, the use of lines played a vital role in the positioning of the man and woman within the piece. There were colors like gray, brown, black and mustard within the piece. The use of various different and uniquely shaped materials keeps your eyes moving from one place to another creating movement throughout the piece. Columns are relatively abundantly used in this piece, along with numerous straight lines. These

The subject matter in The Convalescent is a literal depiction of a young girl who appears to be sick in bed and is passing the time while reading a book. Therefore, this realistic piece is focuses on the young girl. When looking at this piece a viewer is automatically drawn to her, making her the focal point for a viewer. This is because she is distinguished from the rest of the work through placement and the colors used to draw a viewer’s eye to her. By using her as the subject matter, it creates a piece that is transformed into something more meaningful with its content, or the overall meaning of why Willard Metcalf chose to produce this piece.…

1 Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte: George Seurat, 1884 George Seurat, 1859-1891, was a very young French artist who revolutionized the art world. The artists of the day were impressionists but this young artist used what is now referred to as pointillism or divisionism, by using tiny dots and strokes. As part of the Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection this large oil on canvas painting, measuring 81 ¾ x 121 ¼ was created in 1884. From a distance the painting looks as if it was done with a brush, yet upon closer examination every image is created with dots in various sizes and strokes gradually combined with complimentary colors they create images when viewed from far away (Wikipedia, n.d.). Seurat was…

Lizette Fernandez de Lara For the cover of Marilyn Stokstad’s latest edition art history textbook, I would choose Gustave Caillebotte’s painting: Paris, Rainy Day. I believe this painting best represents the traditions of our history and culture through its style and subject matter, while still being reminiscent to classical art from periods such as the Renaissance. The painting, belonging to the Impressionist movement, defines the beginning of modern art by depicting a subject matter unlike the one people were accustomed to in centuries prior to the 19th century.…

Force of Change by Alexis Rockman created in 2017 depicts the junction of the Niagara River, the Erie Canal, and Lake Erie particularly near Buffalo, New York. The painting displays the utter beauty of the Great Lakes, all the while exploring the dangerous forces that threaten them. The piece is one of a series done by Alexis Rockman called “Alexis Rockman: The Great Lakes Cycle” currently displayed in the Grand Rapids Art Museum from January 27 to April 29. Through the use of several different art techniques, Rockman successfully portrays the exquisiteness and despair of the Great Lakes to not only entertain his audience, but also to provoke thought and possibly change in the way we treat and care for the water.…

For this assignment I was given instructions to grab a white piece of paper and crumple it into a ball. Once the paper was made into a ball we were encouraged to color the outside of the crumpled ball with colors of our choosing to express how we felt when we were angry. I used black, red and dark blue as those colors seem naturally dark and are excellent to visually express anger. During the process of coloring the outside of the crumpled paper, there was some sort of emotional relive as I imagined that my paper would be very dark and take the majority of the space as I wanted to show how I feel when I am angry. Surprisingly, when I uncrumpled the paper I was surprised when I noticed that only a small area of the paper was affected by colors that I thought would take much of the paper, I was shocked to see the end result on the paper.…

The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. Its size projects itself on the viewer overwhelming them with its color and size.…

In order to identify and mimic the creative prospects of the work that elicit detail, I had to admire certain elements and suspect their relevance to the piece, where only then I could interpret them and advance my own creation from the techniques that I observed. While we study many beautiful pieces of art throughout the entirety of this semester, between the originality, economic struggles, and over complications that are exhibited within this work, I believe this work is the most advanced of which we saw, considering the region from whence it…

Salvador Dali finished The Persistence of Memory in 1931at Port Lligat, north of Barcelona, Spain and housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1934. This painting was a symbol of Dali’s work and defined surrealism, breaking many of the norms previous and unique in its own way. The painting itself reflects a lot on the way Dali viewed a life and giving it a deeper meaning that others may interpret differently. Dali created a three dimensional experience that was never seen before by using colors, lighting and space.…

Also, the mixture of warm colors on top combined with primary and secondary colors give the painting a delicate effect particularly the three green brush strokes as it adds even more mystery to the painting. Furthermore, the diagonal lines that shape the floor and the barriers of the bridge and the curved lines on the water make a combination of energy and endlessness at the same time because the side of where the scared looking person is, looks completely different from where the water, which is what perhaps reflects the degree of anxiety that the scared looking person was suffering in that particular…
