American gothic literature is the owner to some of the darkest and frightening stories in literature. The story “The Reaper’s Image” by Stephen King is about how people look into an old mirror, and they disappear forever without a trace. “The Reaper’s Image” fits into the American gothic literature tradition because there is a bleak setting, tortured characters, dark events and the supernatural. First, “The Reaper’s Image” demonstrates a very bleak setting, that really makes you feel the horror.…
Gothic Imprint in Modern Times The Gothic style was truly a humanist philosophy that spread throughout Europe in the mid 1300s. It affected both the artists and its patrons. During the cold war tensions where high between governments with opposing theories or ideas. Communism was spreading into Asia and the USA did not want that to happen. Vietnam was one of the most controversial wars that America fought. There were protests and rallies against the Vietnam War put on by United States citizens themselves. Some people believed that we should be interfering with other countries’ governments and others did not.…
It is a photograph, with three-dimensional and naturalistic qualities. It has a narrative and is it asymmetrical. The main feeling I get when I look at this photograph is love. See how loving the couple is standing holding close to each other, enjoying their time together. In addition, a calming feeling is portrayed, they are relaxing, and their positioning of their bodies shows contentment.…
When a coin is tossed into the air one can never accurately predict which side will show its face, we can make predictions and assumptions of the altitude it shall rotate and change its fate but we will never truly know until it lands. This reminds me of the unpredictable reactions in human beings when a difficult situation bares its ugly head. Delve closer on a psychological view and we will see the relationship that the brain has with one’s self, communicating by sending out chemical information from one neuron or nerve cell to another; allowing daily functions such as generating movement, speaking, listening, regulating the systems of the body, thinking and most importantly in this argument; feeling. Sure you can say certain situations evoke selected emotions, emotions enable us to react to situations whether it be with anger, fear, happiness, jealousy and so on but as an…

Medieval Church: Gothic Cathedral The architecture of the medieval Gothic cathedrals is one of the greatest glories of European culture. Since the twelfth century, Gothic art and literature in Europe had become very popular, and were soon brought to perfection in the thirteenth century. The first Gothic cathedral was the abbey of Saint-Denis (built around 1140 and 1150 ce); it was inspired by the famous Abbot Suger. This cathedral was burned down twice and without the reconstruction of it, Notre Dame, and all the cathedrals in the future would not have been established the way they were. Saint-Denis started a revolution of cathedrals in the Gothic style.…

Finial, a gilt bronze ornament created in the 18th century and currently displayed in the Arts of Asia department, has a two visual elements, shape and space. This art piece has organic shape where there is the wavy form of water and bodies of two fish. These two organic shapes contribute to the piece as they exist in the same environment. In Buddhism art, fish in water represent happiness because they are free to swim in the water. This 3D piece has a geometric circle shape that connects every piece of the ornament together, including the water and fish.…
Everywhere you look in life there are different sorts of symbols and conflicts, especially in literature that’s what makes reading it so interesting, the things these authors can do with words. Analysis of the “Cathedral” In the story of the “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, there were three elements that were important to the story .The three elements that were important to this story were the point of view, the plot and the theme. The point view was important because it evaluated deep into the character of the narrator in the story. The plot was another way for the narrator to express his thought and attitude toward other main characters, while the theme was the third element that has common and simple messages that a reader can found, such as in any other story.…
When thinking about this topic and how to address it I first began to really try and understand the meaning of macabre. The official definition is “disturbing and horrifying because of involvement with or depiction of death and injury” and its implication can be clearly seen in the images we have viewed in class. The whole idea of the macabre is thought to have come from a dark time in history and represents more than simply grisly images. The artwork I decided to truly focus on is Hans Baldung Grien, Three Ages of Woman and Death, Germany, c. 1510.…
