Psychological behavior in arsonists Arson is a crime that occurs worldwide, it has an immense impact on the victims and the community the arson takes place in. Arson leads to major financial damage, serious injury, or even death. In many cases in attempting to link psychiatric abnormalities to the arsonists have been focused on sexual motivation for firesetting. This psychiatric flaw has been linked to urination, homosexuality and cruelty to animals in the childhoods of firesetters have all been documented. Those who set fires other than for profit are frequently called pyromaniacs. The study reviewed from the patients files any Axis I and Axis II disorders, the patients personal and criminal background, psychopathy scores, and finally the arsonists motives were examined. In this study, the main findings are that male arson offenders in the study had received more psychiatric treatment in the past, displayed an increase level of alcohol abuse, and were less likely to be diagnosed as suffering from psychotic disorders. As stressed in earlier research, the profile of “the general arsonist” does not exist. Any arsonists that set a fire for pleasure or sexual gratification is not the norm. The study identifies individual characteristics and life experiences that were exclusive to both groups. The research confirmed the research questions in discovering that girls are more likely to run away from home or experience school truancy and school failure that contributes to girls arson behavior.
