Aronnax's Opinions Of Captain Nemo

Improved Essays
When Aronnax, Ned Land, and Conseil first arrived on the Nautilus, they of course were a bit skeptical. When they first met Nemo, his instructions were for them to never leave the submarine; as he did not want the secrets of the Nautilus or his personal affairs to surface. However, they were allowed to roam the boat freely. Captain Nemo showed Aronnax around the humongous metal cylinder, enlightening him with his knowledge of the ocean. Aronnax’s primary interest was with the undersea world; evidently, causing a bit of conflict, due to the fact that the other two wanted to escape as soon as possible. As the story continues Aronnax’s views on Captain Nemo and his actions change drastically. The three endured many questionable events such as

Both Eugene Kranz and Earnest Shackleton exhibited specific leadership behaviors that allowed their situation to come out successfully. Shackleton, most and foremost, was selfless. He knew that his men needed to see him leading from the front so for days he stood on the stern of this lifeboat navigating them to land until he eventually collapsed. Secondly, Shackleton was dedicated to accomplishing his goals. When Shackleton and his crew reached South Georgia, he took two crew members to hike over a mountain to get to the town after days in the freezing cold and little food.…

In Harm’s Way, by Doug Stanton is among the top of my list for truly gripping survival stories. Tasked with a secret mission by the U.S. government; the Indianapolis was moored in the San Francisco Bay - undergoing repair work from her last scuff with the well-disciplined and ruthless Japanese Empire. Caught off guard and seeming almost corralled into the mission, Captain James Butler McVay, a competent and respected man, was ordered to sail components of the world's first operational atomic bomb (Little Boy) across the Pacific. Their destination was the island of Tinian, a massive military stepping stone for allied forces. Once delivered, the Indianapolis reported directly to CINCPAC (Commander-In-Chief, Pacific) Headquarters at Guam for further…

The Naïve Captain Delano In Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno the main character Captain Amasa Delano struck me as a bit naïve and a bit oblivious throughout the story. Captain Delano appears to be a naïve sea captain because he does not put together the puzzle pieces of the strange behavior of the San Dominick’s crew and history as quickly as one would expect. I believe that Melville is using this concept to hint at the fact that the United States did not realize that slavery was such a problem as quickly as the country should have. Some of the pieces that Captain Delano did not put together as quickly as expected are the fact that the slaves aboard the ship acted strangely and the unusual behavior between Cereno and Babo.…

It all begins in Monterey Bay California, where author Johnathan Steinbeck and a close friend by the name of Ed Ricketts seek out boat and crew for a Marine Science expedition. Fishing out of Monterey bay is no strange occurrence, but Steinbeck’s and Ricketts voyage was quite different from all the other boating operations in the area. They were planning on sailing into the Sea of Cortez between the boarder of Mexico, and Baja California. This territory at the time was still being explored and documented do to the rather rural area that surrounds it, so extreme caution was being taken. The purpose of the journey was to document the unique sea life and weather patterns that existed in the Sea of Cortez.…

These bypaths and digressions speak about the beauty of the old ships and naval values as well as the terrific hero-like qualities of Admiral Nelson in which his victories saved his country from Napoleon. He also speaks about the tension and turmoil at that time. Vigilance against mutiny was an obsession and officers did not trust their own crewman. This proves to be foreshadow because the idea of officers not trusting their opwn crewman can be compared similarly to Claggart’s evil doings to the ignorant Billy. These three chapters serve to provide a historical background basis of the story which is important in understanding Billy’s fate at the end of the story.…

Although fictitious, the great Leonard Nimoy’s portrayal of ‘Mr. Spock’ has significantly influenced me. At one point during ‘Star Trek’, Nimoy stated, “The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few.” These words have resonated in my life and in my actions. However, I reiterated the phrase to be more applicable to my life: “The needs of others outweigh the needs of myself”. When someone needs assistance with homework or money to borrow, I always put their needs above my own.…
