Value-Based Purchasing Case Study

A public policy that is having an impact on my practice is the Value-Based Purchasing (VBP). In the VBP, hospitals contribute a certain percentage to a to a payment pool. This VBP payment pool is used to provide a bonus to hospitals for how well they perform. Criteria for which hospitals get reimbursed is process for care, outcomes, patient experience, and efficiency (Bosko, 2016). Today’s health insurance system rewards hospitals for volume; the VBP is intending a shift to reward for quality, reduced care costs, and demonstrated improvements in clinical processes, and patient experience.
While I believe his policy is achieving many of its intended results, there is still much work to be done. For example, VBP is intended to persuade hospitals to perform better by penalizing

I would like for it to be more inclusive so all health care providers are under the same umbrella. Doctors like the one mentioned above would be a lot more motivated to use care plans based on best clinical practice if they too were going to be penalized. First of all, I would have to collect data to support my cause, I would then propose an amendment to the current VBP policy stating the need for physician incentives sue to noncompliance and collaboration with health care facility efforts to provide care based on best clinical practice. I would have to be attentive to the public mood on the issue and changes in support groups. I realize something like this can be very lengthy. Finally, I would have to wait for the correct window of opportunity to come along. Patients would not be expecting to receive spa like services while in the hospital. We are in a health care setting and we are there to get help with health issues not get a scalp massage as one of our patients frequently
