Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Written by Joyce Carol Oates in 1966, it is a creepy story about a fifteen-year-old girl named Connie. She is good-looking, and is always worried about her appearance. Her mother is always on her case on how conceded she is and that she should be more like her older sister June, but she still thought her mother liked her more because she was prettier. June is twenty-four, and works as a secretary at Connie’s high school. She is the total opposite of her younger sister, she saved money and helped clean the house and also cooked. Apart from all that, she was also fat and ugly. Connie didn’t dislike her sister she could be friends with her but there was always something in between that annoyed her. There was one thing that she did like about her sister and that was that June was able to go out with friends. Connie had the opportunity to join her, so she did often. On one of these nights that she goes out she meets with this guy named Eddie, while walking with the Eddie she glanced and there was this guy staring at her in a seductive way she turns but then glances back this guy wags his …show more content…
Starting from head to toe, his hair was shabby and looked like he had a wig on. At one point he puts his glasses on his head very carefully to not try to mess up his hair. She describes his eyes as if they were like crushed glass, and his lashes were thick and black made up of tar. His nose was like a parrot’s beak and his throat was discolored. Connie describes Arnold Friend as having the balance of a drunken man. She describes his boots as, “He had to bend and adjust his boots. Evidently his feet did not go all the way down: The boots must have been stuffed with something so that he would seem taller.” This is probably because he doesn’t have feet he has goat
