Army Rotc History

ROTC, which was founded in 1916, stands for Reserve Officer Training Corps (TodaysMilitary). ROTC is a, “college program offered at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the United States that prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. Military” (TodaysMilitary). Cadets in the ROTC program who choose to receive an Army ROTC scholarship, or enter the Army ROTC Advanced Course must agree to complete an eight-year period of service with the Army. The Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard each have their own branch of ROTC. The Army ROTC program is one of the most demanding and successful leadership programs in the country. At the University of Maine, the ROTC program is an elective curriculum you take alongside your college required courses. The Army ROTC allows cadets to have a normal college experience, but once a cadet graduates they will be commissioned as an Officer in the Army, with the rank of Second Lieutenant. Students, who choose to enroll in the UMaine ROTC program, will, as cadets, “gain an understanding of the importance for a leader to have the ability to develop goals and communicate a vision, creating a cohesive organization committed to lifelong learning and bonded together by trust and teamwork.
