A profession is defined as a paid occupation that requires a formal qualification in a specific area or subject. A Profession of Arms is defined as “the vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority…”. Just like a regular profession, I consider, that the profession of arms is one based on customer service. I will explain. Every profession’s main objective is to serve people, the community. You can successfully perform your profession by gaining the trust of your client. In this case, the Army’s client is the American people. If our government and voters did not trust us as their main force to defend the country, we would have disappeared. If other nations did not trust us we would not have allies. They trust us because we have demonstrated we are a professional force. It is demonstrated from the moment a civilian step into a recruiting center. Forming part of this force is a volunteer call. Only those willing to live up to all values can stay and serve. Serving is a privilege and an honor.

In the past, the force had the mentality that officers were the only leaders and professionals. But, I personally think becoming an officer doesn’t automatically makes you both. What makes us leaders is the impact and influence we have on another Soldiers. What makes us professional is the knowledge we have and how we use it to positively impact everyone around and not to keep it to ourselves. As leaders, we must maintain the highest standards and project the image of the leaders you want your Soldiers to become one day. A leader wins the trust of their comrades.
