Effective leadership is the ability to motivate others to want to accomplish the mission or task and hold the belief that what they are doing has purpose. A leader must possess a strong character and presence that instills confidence in others, as well as the intellect to make effective decisions. Leaders who possess these attributes produce confident soldiers whose use of independent thought and initiative in problem solving situations greatly aid in the accomplishment of necessary tasks. Character is imperative and provides the foundation of a quality leader. An effective leader has integrity and uses their strong moral compass to make and justify decisions. Soldiers watch their leaders and emulate these actions. The actions dictated by a leader’s inward belief structure directly influence how others perceive him. Constant review of a leader’s actions and outward presence is required to ensure stringent adherence to ethical obligations. …show more content…
A quality leader is able to project the image of confidence so that others have an example to follow. They must foster a solid foundation of respect so that the soldiers trust decisions and uphold orders received. Without this foundation, subordinates may question the leader’s orders, thereby compromising a mission and risking the health and lives of others. To earn this respect, a leader must be consistent and adhere to the standards set forth, so that others understand expectations of them. When people see consistency from a leader, it sets a precedent that can become an example in times of greater stress.
