Army Functional Concept

The Army Functional Concept for Sustainment is the endowment of logistics, personnel services, and health service support in order to sustain operations until the mission is accomplished. The endowment of sustainment is a combined process, concerning people, systems, health services, and other support, which is inseparably related to operations. It is important to know that sustainment actions are made possible by computerized systems which track all necessities in order to provide commanders the time and information to make informed support decisions and support commanders’ necessities to make available ready to go forces with flexible operational support.

b. Indeed, the nature of the operational environment has changed a lot since 2010. Long-drawn-out conflicts in both Afghanistan and Iraq proved that the concepts developed based on the intelligence gathered, information collection and management, secured networks and lines of communication (LOCs), application of mission command systems, and sustainment capabilities didn’t achieve the expected results. Everything considered, without a doubt, the future Army forces must develop the competency to sustain operations under settings of scarce natural resource availability by implementing methods which would lower the consumption and minimize reliance on those resources to overcome resource related challenges and guarantee freedom of action. In terms of Human resources, the future Army will require a set of capabilities in order to ensure commanders have the right Soldier, with the right competencies, at the right time.
