Houston Community College’s police force is changing how they operate. By the end of this semester, officers will be rotating from campus to campus and working in overlapping shifts. Today, the HCC police force is broken up into five commands: Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southwest, and Coleman and Southeast under the same command. Officers are assigned to a single commands such as the group that covers the Southeast campus off I-45, Fraga and Coleman. “They operate inside whatever that geography is,” noted HCC Police Chief Greg Cunningham, “very rarely do we take you out of Southeast and move you to Southwest...migrating people across these colleges is not real easy to do.”…

Module 1.4: Modern Day Policing Much has been said about the role of policing over the last few years as it pertains to counter-terrorism, as our world has moved towards an increasingly anxious state of attempting to stop crimes and plots before they happen, similar to the plot of the movie “Minority Report”. Attacks such as 9/11 have caused the world, but especially America, previously almost entirely unscathed by international conflict on its mainland, have caused us to rethink policing, and through legislation such as the PATRIOT Act, surveillance and profiling have become some of the main ways departments try and fight terrorism. As a result, this has caused strain on the communities they intend to serve, as well as putting a serious tax…

Being a police officer for 18 years and currently a Patrol Lieutenant, this is an odd thing to assume because it against everything I believe and was taught. In most misdemeanor cases in Tennessee, officers have the discretion of whether to arrest or issue a citation. If the officer chooses to arrest, he must show a good reason such as there is a likelihood the offense will continue, there is a likelihood the offender would not show in court, or the arrestee has a warrant on file (Widgery, 2013). In felony cases, such as drugs for resale, the officer has no choice and has to arrest.…

Introduction Change management is an important process that is inevitable for organisations to keep up with modern times and Kotter (1995, p. 97) states ‘that critical mistakes in any of the phases can have a devastating impact, slowing momentum and negating hard-won gains’. South Australian Police (SAPOL) has brought about numerous significant corporate changes in recent years. In this paper I will argue that SAPOL should approach change management using Kotter’s eight-step plan. There are two major issues that will be addressed in this argument: (1) comparing how SAPOL conducted its process of change with the implementation of Shield; and (2) what steps SAPOL fulfilled to arrive at its new gender equality policy. Introduction of Shield Shield is computer software that SAPOL recently implemented and has been gradually rolled out since 2013.…

Bradford, I really enjoyed reading your post because we have the same ideas about Thomas Peters. You gave a brief history of Peters’ work at the beginning and it made the post easier to follow. I agree that community policing ideas were based on concepts from Peters. I think more police departments would go to community policing if they just bothered to look at Peters’ work. After all, you can’t expect to correctly police a community without getting them involved.…

The application process and how to get started are found on the Miramar Police Department’s website at http://www.miramarpd.org/employment/, and although I could not find an estimate on how long this process could take, it is evident that this is a lengthy process that will most likely take months to complete. Research has suggested that police corruption is a continuing problem in South Carolina and therefore it is an ongoing issue in Berkeley County’s Hanahan Police Department. This issue has three key parts. The first is Failure to charge Sheriff Wayne Dewitt for resisting arrest which shows a potential issue with ethics in the department. The second part is the fact that by allowing him to stay in office for an extended time the Department may or may not have given the impression of an acceptance of police corruption. Lastly, there is the fact that the news of Sheriff Dewitt’s arrest, and important information was kept from the public for a period of time.…
