The possibility that Sam might get chosen over others that are more deserving, make Jason upset, but the decision to actually hire him is not done by Jason though he might hold weight on the matter. He needs to realize that there is a bit of emotion built in to his thoughts. This is as well as when he thinks what if Sam does not end-up getting married to his niece, or what if she does? Jason considers this as well. These points though valid have an emotional basis. Sam getting the internship, over others can seem unfair, but the hiring process everywhere has multiple layers. The future is uncertain, but Jason can not make decisions based on Sam relationships, if he want those decisions to be ethical. In the summary Aristotle also mentioned that a man that makes lacking restraint in his choices will always choose emotionally and generally end up making an incorrect choice regardless because he makes this decision based on emotion. This is in contrast with a man that is aware and uses rational to choose, he can understand when his passions and emotions might get in the way of making smart decisions on choose the latter. Upon applying the teaching of Aristotle, as analyzed by Erin Kuykendall, to Jason’s ethical dilemma we can take the points that are made in the summary. Jason must assure that he is choosing good and happiness over pleasure. Though Jason might not feel comfort in letting Sam know about the internship, he would have to lie to Sam that there was no internship, this would not be good, it would be ethical. He needs to take the road that leads him to a good decision and let Sam know about the internship. Jason needs to follow that path and let his manager know that Sam is looking for an internship. His manager asked and though Jason thinks of his status, he must reply to his manager, because this would be a choice that is based on virtue and not on what Jason wants for himself. The choices that Jason must make need to be ethical, and to do that based on Aristotle’s teachings, Jason needs to make sure that he lets Sam know about the internship. He needs to tell his manager, about Sam’s interest and not reflect on the feelings he has about Sam’s relationship with his niece or what other candidates are vying for the position as it is not up to him to hire him.
