Abilify® (aripiprazole), a partial dopamine agonist, is an atypical antipsychotic drug, or second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs), with additional antidepressant qualities. It has been approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression as an add-on treatment when the main antidepressant is not effective enough(1,3, 5). Aripiprazole is also used to treat symptoms of mood swings, aggression, irritability, and irritability associated with autistic disorder in pediatric patients aged six years or more. Patient teaching for aripiprazole drug is very important because of the use for this drug as well as the adverse reactions that come along with administration. Adherence to routine medication use is a problem with some patients taking Abilify®. It is important to evaluate accurately the patient’s ability to take responsibility for taking the drugs or do patient teaching with the family as well to assist the patient in this drug therapy. There should be a clear understanding that an assessment of mental status of orientation, mood, and behavior should be assessed before and periodically during therapy. Before taking Abilify®, tell your healthcare provider if you have or had diabetes or a family history of diabetes, as blood glucose monitoring will done before and during drug therapy. Increases in blood sugar can happen in some people who take this medicine and extremely high blood sugar can
