Aries: The Constellation and Zodiac Sign
History/Astronomy:
Aries (meaning “the ram” in Latin) is an ancient, mid-size constellation, actually ranked 39 out of the 88 constellations in terms of size (it takes up 441 square degrees). The constellation was catalogued by Ptolemy, a Greek astronomer, in the 2nd centery. It was recognized as a constellation in 1922 by the International Astronomical Union, and, in 1930 an astronomer named Eugene Delporte defined its boundaries. When attempting to find the constellation in the sky, Aries can be seen in the first quadrant of the Northern Hemisphere (NQ1) with Taurus to the east and Pisces to the west. Ino, King Athamus’s second wife, disliked his children and wanted to sacrifice the son, Phrixus. Nephele, the children’s biological mother, a cloud nymph called Nephele, asked Zeus to save her children, so he sent a golden ram that could speak and reason to save them. Although the daughter, Helle, did not survive the journey, because she drowned in the Dardanelles after falling off the back of the ram, Phrixus did live, and sacrificed the ram to Zeus, giving the golden fleece to King Aettes who, in exchange, gave Phrixus his daughter Chalciope’s hand. This was later stolen by Jason. The strait where Helle drowned was also later renamed to Hellespoint, or sea of Helle, in remembrance of her. Babylonians believed Aries was an agrarian worker, and Neo-Babylonians revised their zodiac where Hamal (Alpha Arietis) is close to the vernal equinox, causing Aries to prominent in the astrological zodiac.
