Nerves turned Ariel’s stomach into knots as she stood outside of the intimidating building. New town, new school, same me, Ariel thought. Students streamed past Ariel into the building and she stayed inanimate. Every once and awhile someone would glance back at her as if she was some sort of freak. Ariel and her mother had just moved from a small house in the mountains to a beach town, from snow to sand. Ariel Clearwater was a goldfish in a sea of piranhas.. She took a deep breath then joined the sea. The hallway was a stretch of blonde hair and tan skin. Ariel’s long black hair stood out like a sore thumb. H annelore Bauer’s sister, the thirteen year old Ingeborg “Inge” Bauer, was lugging around a rectangular wooden box with two attached straps, allowing her to carry the box on her back. Long past nightfall, a full moon illuminating the nighttime sky was enough lighting for her. With not a single oncoming vehicle in sight, she crossed an empty countryside road in the Midwest, towards a ditch. Adelburger Walther Schäffer and FVL leaders Lucas Fields, Preston Connelly, and Gudruna Hurley were waiting for her there. Jumping into the ditch and making a perfect landing on her two feet, the four RGA members were rather glad that Inge was able to come along, in addition to the wooden box that she carried on her back.…

When I was young in Mastic Beach, we spent Saturday mornings on the porch eating pancakes made by mom and naming all the birds that flew by. When I was young in Mastic Beach, the scent of paint lingered on dads clothes as he taught me how to make the images in my head appear on the canvas in front of me. The clay he brought home already sculpted into figures and applauded no matter how unrecognizable they actually were.
