Arid Lands Geography

Decent Essays
Arid lands tend to experience mechanical weathering as the major process and others like salt wedging are as well widespread. Due to less soil covering it, the bed rock is more exposed to erosive forces. the bed rock allows very little water to pass through hence there is substantial runoff observed. Lack of vegetation also permits the formation of certain features like the dunes due to the impact of wind acting on bare land
Arid lands also have huge sand collection where water sink to the ground and prevent overland flow making erosion to take place where heavy rains are observed that can move the sand and form wind-blown sand features. Flush floods are more regular in arid lands and an rainfall is intense but lasts for a short time.

    Mudboils In Tully Valley

    • 1049 Words
    • 5 Pages

Discussion: Mudboils cause structural failures since they are suspensions of gravel, clay, silt and fine sand creating an unstable surface. Since the beginning of persistent mudboil activity in the 1970’s, natural landscapes and engineered features have become subject to land-subsidence as mudoils continually deteriorate the areas in their path (Tresohlavy 2003, pp. 27). Petroleum pipeline rerouting, telephone cable burials, and the collapse of bridges have demonstrated the true capabilities of mudboil persistence and destruction (Kappel & McPherson, 1998). These impacts have created a motive for truly solving the problems of mudboils within the Tully Valley. Portions of underground pipeline have become exposed due to the land subsidence issues…
